Night Tour of Fort Towson

June 7, 8:30 p.m.9:30 p.m.

Event Navigation

The Fort Towson Historic Site will host a nighttime guided summer tour of the grounds on Saturday, June 7, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Staff will lead guests through parts of the expansive property in a rare chance for visitors to be on site after dark.

Guests will follow a historian around parts of the site and learn more about the history of the post. The historian’s narration will expand beyond what can be read in the Museum’s exhibits and the site’s signage. Beginning at the Museum, the tour will walk to the center of the parade ground and learn about the basic timeline of Fort Towson’s history. After concluding this part of the tour, the historian will lead guests along the main structures’ foundations, where the group will stop in front of each and hear more about the buildings that once stood there. Guests will also learn about various people who were at Fort Towson and activities that were often part of daily life. The tour will make its way to the recreated Sutler Store before concluding at the Museum.

The fort was vital to the westward expansion of the United States from 1824 until it was closed in 1854. Today, the site is home to a visitor center, reconstructed Sutler Store, covered picnic area and walking trail of the historic ruins.

The cost of the night tour is $10 per person. Attendees should wear appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes. Bug spray is also recommended. Flashlights will be allowed while walking between stops.
